Characters
There are many important characters in the story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass but we'll just take a look at some of the main ones. In the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland portion of the book the main character is Alice. Alice is a young girl, who is very polite and well mannered. Alice is the total opposite of the other characters that she meets during her journey through Wonderland. Another character that plays an important role in this story is the White Rabbit, he is the character that Alice follows around. He's an odd looking creature, that wears a vest and a watch. He's a worrisome little creature too but, also can be quite rude, this rudeness was shown when he mistook Alice as a servant and began to order her around. He is also very busy, he is always rushing around and always has somewhere to go. The Cheshire Cat is a magical, mysterious, and fat cat. He has the ability to magically appear and disappear whenever he pleases. He meets with Alice quite often, popping up at the most random times. The Cheshire Cat is the only character that Alice feels she can have a somewhat intelligent conversation with. The caterpillar that Alice meets is a hookah smoking guru or better known as a genie. He was the first creature to give Alice advice on her journey and he helps her to understand how to control the world she has been trapped in. The Duchess is a character that shows how quickly a persons mood can change, she starts as being violent and moody but then becomes nicer as the story goes on. Alice also meets a group of strange men, this group consists of the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, and the Dormouse. They are all quite silly and rude and they confuse Alice greatly. Alice is easily frustrated by this group of characters so as a result she doesn't spend much time with them. The Queen of Hearts is the ruler of Wonderland, she tries to solve her problems by beheading people and most times that doesn't work. She relates well to the Red Queen of the Looking Glass World. They both are ruthless and try to dominate over everything. The Mock Turtle and the Gryphon are also two important characters, they spend their time telling Alice of their school days. These two characters are very playful and joyful, and Alice for the most part enjoyed their company.
In the Through the Looking Glass portion of the book there are also many characters that Carroll talks about. One of the first characters that is talked about is the White Queen. She is a very "messy" women but she is the one who tells Alice how the Looking Glass world works. The White King is married to the White Queen, he is the one who sent all of his men to fix Humpty Dumpty. Humpty Dumpty is a very round man, he's actually an egg shaped creature. This character is very mean to Alice, but he is the one who explains the poem "Jabberwocky" to Alice. Tweeedledum and Tweedledee are two identical little men, they end up fighting each other over something very stupid. The Unicorn and the Lion are two interesting characters. The Unicorn thinks that Alice is very weird and unusual looking and he/she and the lion fight each other. Alice also meets talking flowers, each with a different attitude towards Alice. Most of the flowers are quite rude towards Alice, but there is one that actually holds a nice conversation with her and that was the tiger-lily.
